The childhood quote that personally applied was, “To think
outside the box.” This statement
followed because of two reasons. The
creative aspect of the brain was allowed from the age of 3 forward. A favorite art form was abstract
painting. Family members never had to
guess because the completion was brought forth by a thought or emotion. For example, the following painting was about
a mood:
Next, the enrollment to Montessori Schools at the age of 4
fueled more creativity. The favorite
memory is the shoe polishing station in class.
Shoes and appropriate colors were provided; however, the teacher never
stated that personal shoes could not be polished. Therefore, the white polish and saddle shoes
became one. Parents were mad!! Then, the teacher warned all the students
only shoes at the center were to be polished.
The favorite childhood book, Are You My Mother? by P.D. Eastman.
This book has a special meaning.
Providing a voice for each character, translating the book from English
to Spanish, and reading the book before Kindergartners has been a personal
delight. A cute story is about a child
who would ask repeatedly for the baby bird voice. He finally caught on and spoke this way to
his friends at school.

ReplyDeleteI loved your story about the shoe polish station. Children take everything so literally, and sometimes we as teachers need to point out the obvious (to us) in order to avoid craziness. Thanks for the laugh.

Hi I had never read that book before until I saw your blog and it sounds very interesting. I will look into buying the book and reading it to my classroom. Almost 90% of my class speak spanish. Sometimes it's good that we introduce new books to the children. Every year we get to order new books for the children and sometimes it's hard to judge a book by it's cover.
